The
Wall Street Journal cites a study of the Insurance Research Council that reveals that more and more people are letting their car insurance lapse to save money. As the jobless rate has climbed, so has the number of drivers who are driving without car insurance. Your odds of being in an accident with an uninsured motorist are substantial.
You may be surprised to learn that it is perfectly legal in Virginia to drive without car insurance.
That trend is
very bad news for you and everyone else on the road. Why? If you are hit and injured by a driver who has no insurance, sure, you could sue that person to pay for your losses. But, if he has no insurance, he probably has no assets with which to compensate you. (The Wall Street Journal article also says that unlicensed and uninsured drivers are disproportionately involved in fatal accidents.)
So, you must have protection from your own auto insurance policy. Call your insurance agent today and buy the highest amount of uninsured motorist coverage your company will sell you. It is more important now than ever.
We have written a report on this important protection. Call our office, 703-273-9500, and request a copy of the report -- it's free -- or send me an email (
