Woman tells what it was like when she was a 13 year old girl and regained consciousness after being in a coma from a traumatic brain injury.
My Lost Summer was written by Elizabeth Fryer about her recovery from the traumatic brain injury (TBI) she suffered from a horseback riding accident when she was 13 years old. The book is unique since it is written from her point of view as a 13-year-old girl. She divided the book into three parts:
1. The emotional rollercoaster her family was on as they saw her in her unconscious state in the hospital bed. 2. Her experiences as she reentered the conscious world, with her right side paralyzed and unable to speak, and the confusion and frustration she felt. 3. The physical and emotional challenges she faced returning to the eighth grade and as she went through high school, and how she got through them.
I don't know Ms. Fryer and don't get any benefit from mentioning the book. It's just that I believe it could be a valuable resource for anyone who is caring for a child who has suffered a traumatic brain injury.
